One of the chronic health problems affecting the quality of lives of children in the US today is asthma. This happens when the interior walls of the air pipes carrying air to the lungs become sore or bulge a bit.

Of the 20 million people in US suffering from asthma, about 9 million are children. The chances of Asthma turning into a life threatening disease is more likely in children due to the very basic fact that they have very small air pipes.

The indications of asthma include cough, pain in the chest, wheezing, and frequent trouble in breathing. It particularly attacks very early in the morning or very late in the night.

The most common causes of asthma include sources of allergens like the mold, animal fur with dead skin cells and environment that irritates the air flow like high pollution, cigarette smoke, sudden changes in the weather conditions, constant exposure to dust mites etc.

Interestingly, all the top ten cities in the US with cases of asthma are from the eastern states and that too mostly from the south eastern states.
