If you’ve ever seen a Newfoundland you may be intimidated by their massive size and large coats. But, underneath that tough exterior is an adorable gentle giant. These dogs are so big that they top the chart as the 5th largest dog in the world – they stand tall between 27-30 inches and weigh as much as 150 pounds. And when you add to their height their thick double coat, they appear even larger.
The breed comes from the Canadian island of Newfoundland, as the name suggests. Fishermen in the area had need of dogs that could aid them onboard. Newfoundlands, with their natural ability to swim due to their partially webbed feet, were a natural choice. The dogs are kept warm by their thick fur and were strong enough to save a grown man from drowning. Their loyalty makes them ideal pets to families… with the exception that they make a little extra room in their homes and are fine with lots and LOTS of hair left around.
