Jackie Huang is a talented paper artist from Los Angeles. We contacted the author to ask some questions about her work: ?The medium I use is something most people encounter as an everyday object ? paper. I try to turn that ordinary object into something extraordinary. Something that asks the viewer to stop, to take a second look, and to think outside the box.
I first got into paper art through pop-ups. At school, I had been struggling with my drawing and painting skills for a while. I wanted rules and yes/no answers for things, but art doesn?t usually work that way. But when I found paper as a medium, everything clicked. I?ve always had a very good sense for 3D spatial reasoning so I found working with paper to be very natural.
Now, I use a variety of techniques to create my work ? layering, quilling, paper engineering, etc. I don?t limit myself to a particular technique so I can explore and experiment.
I seek inspiration from lots of places ? animation, fashion, stationery, packaging, and children?s books. The biggest inspiration though has been events from my own life. It may sound cheesy, but I think that?s when I create my best work. It?s when I can tell the story that no one else can tell?.
