Europe’s First Ever Underwater Museum With Hyperrealistic Human Sculptures

Submerged fourteen meters below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean lies the first underwater art museum in Europe, the The Museo Atlantico. Located just off the coast of the Lanzarote Island the museum will feature sculptures and installations created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, an artist known for creating issue-drive work.

This time around the theme is the current worldwide refugee dilemma and is made up of two separate installations, both of which feature hyperrealistic sculptures of people as if they were frozen in time. The first one is called The Rubicon and is a collection of 35 people walking towards a gate, stretching further than the eye can see into oblivion. The second installation is titled The Raft of Lampedusa and is closely related to Syrian humanitarian crisis, depicting figures waiting in a boat to be rescued.

The museum will be opening to the public on February 25th allowing snorkelers and divers to explore this surreal underwater world.
